Refrigeration Power and Compressor Diagnostic

Diagnoses why the compressor or evaporator fan may not be running. Covers thermostat, relay, overload, and compressor electrical checks. Stops short of sealed-system work.

High VoltageTechnician5-10 min

Qualified technician handoff: stop before live electrical testing, sealed-system refrigeration work, compressor service, or protected-compartment access unless a qualified technician is handling the work.

  • Oil leak detected at compressor: Immediate stop. Seal integrity compromised. Escalate to licensed refrigeration technician.
  • Compressor running but extremely hot or making knocking sounds: Unplug machine immediately. Compressor may be running against a sealed-system restriction. Escalate to licensed refrigeration technician.
  • Repeated overload trips: Do not bypass the overload. Investigate root cause. Escalate if needed.

Checklist

Guided Diagnostic Steps

Work from low-risk checks toward technician-level inspection only when evidence supports it.

  1. 1

    Verify Door Seal Integrity

    operator-intermediateunskilled

Close the door on a dollar bill at several points around the perimeter. The bill should have slight drag when pulled. No-drag spots indicate seal gaps.

Expected: Consistent slight drag around the entire door perimeter.

    Evidence to note: note

  2. 2

    Inspect Condenser Coil and Fan

    operator-intermediatehigh

Visually inspect the condenser coil for lint, dust, or debris. Check that the condenser fan blade is not obstructed. Clean the coil if airflow is restricted.

Qualified technician handoff: stop before live electrical testing, sealed-system refrigeration work, compressor service, or protected-compartment access unless a qualified technician is handling the work.

    Stop conditions
    • Condenser fan blade cracked or broken
    • Condenser coil physically damaged

Expected: Condenser coil is clean with clear airflow path. Fan blade rotates freely.

  3. 3

    Check Temperature Setting and Thermostat

    operator-intermediatehigh

Verify the temperature control is set to the correct position. With the machine unplugged, check thermostat continuity. The thermostat contacts should be closed when the temperature is above the set point.

Expected: Thermostat contacts show continuity when temperature is above set point.

    Evidence to note: meter-reading

Where to find this

Use this as orientation before touching the machine. It is location help, not a repair instruction.

Refrigeration System

Start at the affected product shelf or selection row; compare the tray, coil, and product path with a nearby working selection.

  • Maintains product storage temperature within set range using compressor-based forced-air cooling.
  • Compressor
  • Condenser coil and fan
  • Evaporator coil and fan

Do not open sealed-system or compressor areas unless a qualified refrigeration technician is handling the work.
