Compressor Not Running — Initial Investigation
The unit is not cooling, and the compressor does not appear to be running. This investigation focuses on non-sealed system causes first.
Qualified technician handoff: stop before live electrical testing, sealed-system refrigeration work, compressor service, or protected-compartment access unless a qualified technician is handling the work.
- Suspected refrigerant leak detected: Do not attempt repair. Seal system work requires EPA 608 certification. Evacuate area if large leak suspected. Hand off to licensed technician.
- Compressor extremely hot and tripping on overload repeatedly: Disconnect power and allow compressor to cool. Repeated cycling will damage the compressor. Investigate airflow, condenser condition, and start components before re-energizing.
- If the compressor fails to run after initial checks, a qualified technician must assess the refrigeration cycle, including refrigerant levels and electrical components, as this is a sealed system procedure.
