Not Cooling Diagnostic Flow

Determine whether the refrigeration issue is due to airflow, controls, compressor operation, or sealed-system problems using non-invasive checks first.

High VoltageOperator5-10 min
Cooling4 stepsoperator-intermediate

Qualified technician handoff: stop before live electrical testing, sealed-system refrigeration work, compressor service, or protected-compartment access unless a qualified technician is handling the work.

  • Any sign of refrigerant leak (oil residue, hissing, frost on improper lines): Stop immediately. Do not attempt sealed-system repair. Escalate to EPA-certified, manufacturer-authorized refrigeration technician.
  • Compressor extremely hot with no fan operation: Unplug machine. Allow compressor to cool. Investigate fan failure before re-energizing.

Checklist

Guided Diagnostic Steps

Work from low-risk checks toward technician-level inspection only when evidence supports it.

  1. 1

    Check Door Seal and Airflow

    operator-intermediatelow

Close the main door fully and inspect the gasket for gaps, tears, or debris. Check that the condenser area at the lower rear or side has unobstructed airflow. Verify the condenser coil is not blocked by lint or debris.

Qualified technician handoff: stop before live electrical testing, sealed-system refrigeration work, compressor service, or protected-compartment access unless a qualified technician is handling the work.

    Flashlight or Work Light

Expected: Door gasket seals evenly around the full perimeter. Condenser area is clear.

    Listen for Compressor Operation

    operator-intermediatelow

With the machine powered and the door closed, listen near the lower compressor compartment for compressor humming or vibration. Also listen for the condenser fan running.

Qualified technician handoff: stop before live electrical testing, sealed-system refrigeration work, compressor service, or protected-compartment access unless a qualified technician is handling the work.

    Stop conditions
    • Compressor is making a loud clicking or grinding noise — unplug and escalate to avoid compressor burnout

Expected: Compressor is audibly running or vibrating. Condenser fan is running.

  3. 3

    Inspect Evaporator for Icing

    operator-intermediatehigh

Through the interior access or with the lower panel removed, visually inspect the evaporator coil for ice buildup. Light frost is normal during operation; solid ice blocking airflow indicates a defrost or airflow problem.

    Flashlight or Work Light

Expected: Light frost on coil surface, no solid ice blockage.

  4. 4

    Check Compressor Electrical Supply

    technician-advancedlive-voltage

With appropriate live-voltage safety measures, verify that the compressor is receiving voltage when the controller calls for cooling. This step involves live-voltage measurement around the compressor compartment and must be performed only by qualified personnel.

Qualified technician handoff: stop before live electrical testing, sealed-system refrigeration work, compressor service, or protected-compartment access unless a qualified technician is handling the work.

    Digital Multimeter
    Stop conditions
    • Visible refrigerant oil or frost on non-evaporator lines — sealed system breach suspected

Expected: Voltage present at compressor terminals when cooling is called for.

    Evidence to note: meter-reading

Where to find this

Use this as orientation before touching the machine. It is location help, not a repair instruction.

Refrigeration System

Start at the affected product shelf or selection row; compare the tray, coil, and product path with a nearby working selection.

  • Maintains cold product temperature using a forced-air condensing, CFC-free sealed system with automatic defrost. Rated for outdoor installation.
  • compressor
  • condenser-coil-and-fan
  • evaporator-coil-and-fan

Do not open sealed-system or compressor areas unless a qualified refrigeration technician is handling the work.
