Not Cooling - Compressor Not Running

Diagnostic for FoodKing units where the cabinet temperature is high and the compressor does not appear to be running. Checks thermal overload, start relay, and control signal before sealed-system assessment.

Qualified technician handoff: stop before live electrical testing, sealed-system refrigeration work, compressor service, or protected-compartment access unless a qualified technician is handling the work.

  • Refrigerant oil leak detected
  • Compressor excessively hot or making unusual noises
  • Repeated compressor start failures indicating internal fault
  • Any sealed-system breach suspected

  1. 1

    Confirm Compressor Is Not Running

    operator-intermediatehigh

With the machine plugged in and powered on, place your hand near the compressor at the bottom rear of the cabinet. Feel for vibration and listen for any humming sound. A compressor that is running will vibrate slightly and produce a low hum.

Qualified technician handoff: stop before live electrical testing, sealed-system refrigeration work, compressor service, or protected-compartment access unless a qualified technician is handling the work.

    Stop conditions
    • Compressor is excessively hot to touch
    • Burning smell from compressor area
    • Visible oil puddle under compressor

Expected: Clear determination of whether compressor is running, trying to start, or completely silent.

    Check Condenser Fan Operation

    operator-intermediatehigh

Observe whether the condenser fan near the compressor is spinning. The condenser fan should run whenever the compressor runs. If the compressor is off, the fan state provides clues about the control signal.

Qualified technician handoff: stop before live electrical testing, sealed-system refrigeration work, compressor service, or protected-compartment access unless a qualified technician is handling the work.

    Flashlight or Work Light
    Stop conditions
    • Fan blade obstructed by debris - clear carefully with power off

Expected: Condenser fan should be spinning if the compressor should be running.

    Check Compressor Power Input

    technician-advancedlive-voltage

With appropriate training and safety precautions, verify whether line voltage is reaching the compressor terminals. This requires live-voltage measurement. If you are not trained for live-voltage work, stop and hand off. Do not attempt to measure refrigerant pressures or open the sealed system.

Qualified technician handoff: stop before live electrical testing, sealed-system refrigeration work, compressor service, or protected-compartment access unless a qualified technician is handling the work.

    Digital Multimeter
    Stop conditions
    • Any sign of arcing or electrical hazard

    Evidence to note: meter-reading

  4. 4

Assess Start Relay and Thermal Overload

    technician-advancedlive-voltage

If voltage reaches the compressor but it does not run, the start relay or thermal overload may be faulty. With machine unplugged, inspect the start relay mounted on the compressor for signs of burnt contacts, rattling internal components, or discoloration. Do not bypass the thermal overload.

Qualified technician handoff: stop before live electrical testing, sealed-system refrigeration work, compressor service, or protected-compartment access unless a qualified technician is handling the work.

    Flashlight or Work Light
    Stop conditions
    • Relay shows signs of melting or burning

Expected: Start relay and overload appear intact without signs of failure.

    Evidence to note: meter-reading

  5. 5

    Check Temperature Control Signal

    technician-advancedlive-voltage

If no voltage reaches the compressor, the temperature sensor, thermostat, or controller may not be calling for cooling. Verify the temperature sensor is properly connected and the controller is commanding cooling. Check for error codes on the display related to temperature.

Qualified technician handoff: stop before live electrical testing, sealed-system refrigeration work, compressor service, or protected-compartment access unless a qualified technician is handling the work.

    Digital Multimeter

Expected: Controller sends cooling command when cabinet temperature is above setpoint.

    Evidence to note: meter-reading
