Compressor Will Not Start

This diagnostic sequence determines the root cause when the refrigeration unit's compressor fails to cycle on when the internal temperature dictates it should be running.

Qualified technician handoff: stop before live electrical testing, sealed-system refrigeration work, compressor service, or protected-compartment access unless a qualified technician is handling the work.

  • Compressor hums loudly and continuously without starting: Unplug immediately. Locked rotor condition can overheat compressor. Requires manufacturer-or-licensed technician.
  • Oil leak visible around compressor or fittings: Refrigerant leak suspected. Do not operate. Requires manufacturer-or-licensed technician for sealed system repair.
  • Compressor runs but cabinet temperature continues to rise: Possible sealed system issue such as low charge or restriction. Requires manufacturer-or-licensed technician.
  • Due to the involvement of live-voltage and refrigeration components, a qualified technician must diagnose the compressor issue to ensure safe and accurate repair.
