Compressor Not Running — Initial Checks
Safe, non-invasive checks to determine why the compressor is not operating. Does not include sealed-system work.
Qualified technician handoff: stop before live electrical testing, sealed-system refrigeration work, compressor service, or protected-compartment access unless a qualified technician is handling the work.
- Oil puddle detected under compressor: Suspected refrigerant leak. Do not operate compressor. Tag machine. Contact manufacturer-authorized service.
- Compressor extremely hot: Overload condition. Allow cooling. Investigate airflow and condenser before restarting.
- Sealed-system access needed: Andon stop. Only manufacturer-authorized or EPA-certified technicians may perform sealed-system work.

Check Temperature Control Setting
operator-intermediatelowLocate the temperature control thermostat or sensor. Verify it is set to a normal cooling position, not off or defrost. Note current setting.
Expected: Thermostat is set within normal operating range.

Inspect Evaporator Frost Pattern
operator-intermediatehighObserve the evaporator coil through the access panel or visible area. Note whether frost is present and its distribution pattern.

Expected: Light, even frost across evaporator surface indicates normal operation. Heavy ice block indicates defrost or airflow issue.
