Compressor Not Running — Initial Checks

Safe, non-invasive checks to determine why the compressor is not operating. Does not include sealed-system work.

High VoltageOperator5-10 min
Cooling2 stepsoperator-intermediate

Qualified technician handoff: stop before live electrical testing, sealed-system refrigeration work, compressor service, or protected-compartment access unless a qualified technician is handling the work.

  • Oil puddle detected under compressor: Suspected refrigerant leak. Do not operate compressor. Tag machine. Contact manufacturer-authorized service.
  • Compressor extremely hot: Overload condition. Allow cooling. Investigate airflow and condenser before restarting.
  • Sealed-system access needed: Andon stop. Only manufacturer-authorized or EPA-certified technicians may perform sealed-system work.

    Check Temperature Control Setting

    operator-intermediatelow

Locate the temperature control thermostat or sensor. Verify it is set to a normal cooling position, not off or defrost. Note current setting.

Expected: Thermostat is set within normal operating range.

    Inspect Evaporator Frost Pattern

    operator-intermediatehigh

Observe the evaporator coil through the access panel or visible area. Note whether frost is present and its distribution pattern.

    Stop conditions
    • Evaporator completely iced over — do not force defrost with sharp objects

Expected: Light, even frost across evaporator surface indicates normal operation. Heavy ice block indicates defrost or airflow issue.

Where to find this

Use this as orientation before touching the machine. It is location help, not a repair instruction.

Refrigeration System

Start at the affected product shelf or selection row; compare the tray, coil, and product path with a nearby working selection.

  • Maintains product temperature within safe range through compressor-driven forced-air cooling.
  • Compressor
  • Condenser coil and fan
  • Evaporator coil and fan

Do not open sealed-system or compressor areas unless a qualified refrigeration technician is handling the work.
