Machine Completely Dead — Power Investigation

Systematic approach to identify why the machine shows no signs of life, starting from the wall outlet and working inward.

High VoltageTechnician5-10 min
Power3 stepstechnician-advanced

Qualified technician handoff: stop before live electrical testing, sealed-system refrigeration work, compressor service, or protected-compartment access unless a qualified technician is handling the work.

  • Burning smell detected at any step: Stop immediately. Unplug machine. Do not continue. Tag out of service.
  • Fuse blows again after replacement: Do not replace again. Investigate short circuit. Escalate to qualified technician.
  • Live voltage measurement required and operator is not qualified: Stop. Hand off to technician-advanced or manufacturer service.

Guided Diagnostic Steps

Work from low-risk checks toward technician-level inspection only when evidence supports it.

  1. 1

    Verify Wall Outlet Power

    owner-basicbasic

Use a known-good lamp or outlet tester at the wall outlet. Confirm the outlet provides expected voltage. If the outlet fails, the issue is building-side, not the machine.

    Outlet Tester

Expected: Outlet tester shows correct wiring and voltage present.

    Evidence to note: meter-reading

  2. 2

    Inspect Power Cord

    owner-basicbasic

Unplug the machine. Visually inspect the full length of the power cord for cuts, kinks, burns, or exposed conductors. Check the plug for bent or corroded prongs.

    Flashlight or Work Light
    Stop conditions
    • Cord has exposed copper or burn marks

Expected: Power cord is intact with no visible damage.

    Evidence to note: photo

  3. 3

    Check Internal Fuse or Breaker

    technician-advancedhigh

With machine unplugged, access the internal fuse or circuit breaker. Inspect visually for blown fuse element or tripped breaker indicator. If a fuse is suspect, test continuity with a multimeter.

    Digital Multimeter
    Stop conditions
    • Fuse is blackened or has burn residue — investigate short circuit before replacing

Expected: Fuse shows continuity or breaker is in ON position.

    Evidence to note: meter-reading
