Products Are Warm — Cooling Investigation

Guided diagnosis for insufficient cooling, starting with simple non-invasive checks before progressing to refrigeration diagnosis.

Low RiskOperator5-10 min
Cooling4 stepsoperator-intermediate

Qualified technician handoff: stop before live electrical testing, sealed-system refrigeration work, compressor service, or protected-compartment access unless a qualified technician is handling the work.

  • Burning smell from compressor area: Unplug immediately. Do not continue. Tag out of service and escalate.
  • Compressor clicking repeatedly but not starting: Unplug to prevent further damage. Escalate to technician-advanced.
  • Sealed-system frost pattern abnormality confirmed: Stop. Sealed-system work requires manufacturer-or-licensed technician.

Guided Diagnostic Steps

Work from low-risk checks toward technician-level inspection only when evidence supports it.

  1. 1

    Check Door Seal Integrity

    owner-basicbasic

Close the door on a thin piece of paper at several points around the perimeter. The paper should be gripped firmly. Repeat at top, bottom, left side, right side, and corners.

Expected: Paper is held firmly at all test points around the door perimeter.

  2. 2

Check Condenser Coil Cleanliness and Airflow

    owner-basicbasic

With machine unplugged, locate the condenser coil area (typically near the compressor at the bottom rear or lower front). Shine a flashlight through the coil fins. Heavy dust or debris blocking airflow must be cleaned. Ensure nothing is stacked against the machine blocking ventilation.

Qualified technician handoff: stop before live electrical testing, sealed-system refrigeration work, compressor service, or protected-compartment access unless a qualified technician is handling the work.

    Flashlight or Work Light

Expected: Condenser fins are mostly clear with light visible through them. Adequate clearance around machine.

    Listen for Compressor Operation

    owner-basicbasic

With the machine plugged in and powered, listen near the lower rear of the machine for compressor humming or vibration. Place a hand gently on the compressor body to feel for vibration. Be cautious of hot surfaces.

Qualified technician handoff: stop before live electrical testing, sealed-system refrigeration work, compressor service, or protected-compartment access unless a qualified technician is handling the work.

    Stop conditions
    • Loud clicking from compressor area
    • Burning smell

Expected: Compressor is vibrating or humming, indicating it is running.

    Check Evaporator Frost Pattern

    operator-intermediateintermediate

With power off and fan stopped, observe the evaporator coil through the access panel. A properly functioning system should show even light frost coverage. A single frost ball, total ice block, or completely bare coil each indicate different issues.

    Flashlight or Work Light
    Stop conditions
    • Thick ice completely blocking airflow through evaporator — defrost needed before further diagnosis

Expected: Even light frost across the evaporator surface.
