Refrigeration — Products Not Cold

Diagnoses refrigeration performance issues starting with non-invasive checks (airflow, cleanliness, door seal, temperature) before considering component-level investigation.

Qualified technician handoff: stop before live electrical testing, sealed-system refrigeration work, compressor service, or protected-compartment access unless a qualified technician is handling the work.

  • Compressor runs but cooling is inadequate after all basic checks pass: Sealed system diagnosis required. Hand off to manufacturer-or-licensed refrigeration technician.
  • Evidence of refrigerant leak: Evacuate area if hissing is heard. Contact licensed refrigeration technician.
  • Unusual compressor noise (grinding, clanking, rattling): Unplug machine immediately. Compressor may be mechanically failing.

Checklist

Guided Diagnostic Steps

Work from low-risk checks toward technician-level inspection only when evidence supports it.

  1. 1

    Verify Temperature Setting

    operator-intermediatelow

Using the 3-button programming interface, verify that the temperature set point is correctly configured. Check that the temperature control has not been turned to the warmest setting or accidentally changed.

Expected: Temperature set point is within the expected cold-drink range.

  2. 2

Inspect Condenser Coil Cleanliness and Airflow

    operator-intermediatelow

With the door open, locate the condenser coil area in the lower front of the machine. Visually check for dust, lint, or debris blocking airflow through the coil fins. Ensure there is adequate clearance around the machine for air circulation.

Qualified technician handoff: stop before live electrical testing, sealed-system refrigeration work, compressor service, or protected-compartment access unless a qualified technician is handling the work.

    Stop conditions
    • If condenser area is extremely hot to the touch, allow cooling before cleaning.

Expected: Condenser coil is clean with clear airflow paths on both sides.

  3. 3

    Check Door Seal Integrity

    operator-intermediatelow

Close the door on a sheet of paper at several points around the perimeter. The paper should be held firmly. If it slides easily, the gasket is not sealing.

Expected: Paper is held firmly at all test points around the door perimeter.

    Evidence to note: note

  4. 4

    Listen for Compressor Operation

    operator-intermediatelow

With the door closed and machine powered, listen near the bottom of the machine for a steady low hum indicating the compressor is running. Also check if the condenser fan is running (air movement near the condenser coil).

Qualified technician handoff: stop before live electrical testing, sealed-system refrigeration work, compressor service, or protected-compartment access unless a qualified technician is handling the work.

    Flashlight or Work Light
    Stop conditions
    • If you hear grinding, clanking, or rattling from the compressor, unplug the machine and hand off to licensed refrigeration technician.

Expected: Compressor hum is audible and condenser fan is moving air.

    Evidence to note: note

  5. 5

    Check Compressor Power Supply

    technician-advancedlive-voltage

With the machine unplugged, locate the wiring to the compressor area and inspect connectors for looseness or damage. This is a visual check only. If connectors appear good and you are qualified, plug in and carefully verify that voltage reaches the compressor wiring when the thermostat calls for cooling.

Qualified technician handoff: stop before live electrical testing, sealed-system refrigeration work, compressor service, or protected-compartment access unless a qualified technician is handling the work.

    Stop conditions
    • Any sign of refrigerant oil leak (oily residue near compressor fittings). Stop and contact licensed refrigeration technician.
    • Burning smell or heat-damaged wiring near compressor.

Expected: Voltage present at compressor electrical connection when thermostat calls for cooling.

    Evidence to note: meter-reading

Location Help

Where to find this

Use this as orientation before touching the machine. It is location help, not a repair instruction.

Refrigeration System

Start at the affected product shelf or selection row; compare the tray, coil, and product path with a nearby working selection.

  • Maintains cold-drink product temperature within target range using a sealed hermetic compressor system.
  • Hermetically sealed compressor unit (mounted externally beneath cooling compartment)
  • Condenser coil (mounted near compressor, visible from front with door open)
  • Evaporator coil (inside cooling compartment)

Do not open sealed-system or compressor areas unless a qualified refrigeration technician is handling the work.
