Refrigeration - Compressor Not Running

This diagnostic is performed when the machine is warm and the refrigeration compressor does not start or run.

High VoltageTechnician8-12 min
Cooling6 stepstechnician-advanced

Qualified technician handoff: stop before live electrical testing, sealed-system refrigeration work, compressor service, or protected-compartment access unless a qualified technician is handling the work.

  • Compressor running continuously without cooling: Suspect sealed-system leak or restriction. Do NOT attempt repair. Escalate to licensed refrigeration technician.
  • Hot compressor with burning smell: Immediately remove power. Do not re-energize. Compressor may have internal electrical failure.
  • Frost buildup covering entire evaporator as solid ice: Defrost issue or airflow problem. Do not chip ice. Allow natural defrost and investigate airflow and defrost system.
  • If the compressor runs continuously without cooling, do not attempt repair; this requires a qualified technician specializing in refrigeration.

Location Help

Where to find this

Use this as orientation before touching the machine. It is location help, not a repair instruction.

Refrigeration System

Start at the affected product shelf or selection row; compare the tray, coil, and product path with a nearby working selection.

  • Maintains product temperature through compressor-driven forced-air cooling cycle.
  • compressor
  • condenser coil
  • condenser fan

Do not open sealed-system or compressor areas unless a qualified refrigeration technician is handling the work.
