Diagnose Vend Motor Not Turning

Diagnostic flow for a single column where the vend motor does not rotate when that selection is made.

High VoltageOperator5-10 min
Vend path4 stepsoperator-intermediate

Qualified technician handoff: stop before live electrical testing, sealed-system refrigeration work, compressor service, or protected-compartment access unless a qualified technician is handling the work.

  • Motor burning smell or overheating: Unplug immediately. Do not attempt further actuation. Hand off to technician.
  • Live-voltage measurement at harness connector: Technician-advanced level required. Hand off if not qualified.

Guided Diagnostic Steps

Work from low-risk checks toward technician-level inspection only when evidence supports it.

  1. 1

Check for Product Jam or Obstruction

    operator-intermediatelow

Open the machine door. Visually inspect the affected column for products caught between coil and shelf, items wedged sideways, or foreign objects obstructing the spiral rotation.

    Flashlight or Work Light

Expected: Column is clear with no jammed products or foreign objects.

  2. 2

    Inspect Motor Harness Connector

    operator-intermediatehigh

Locate the harness connector for the affected column motor. Verify it is fully seated, pins are straight, and no corrosion or discoloration is present.

    Stop conditions
    • Burnt connector — do not reapply power to this connector until harness is repaired

Expected: Connector is firmly attached with clean, undamaged pins.

  3. 3

Test Motor Actuation Signal from Controller

    operator-intermediatehigh

With the machine powered, initiate a vend on the affected column. Carefully observe whether the motor shaft or coupling attempts to rotate. This may require observing the motor while someone else makes the selection, or using test mode if available.

    Stop conditions
    • Motor emits burning smell — unplug immediately

Expected: Motor shaft rotates or attempts to rotate when vend is initiated.

    Evidence to note: note

  4. 4

    Isolate Motor from Controller

    technician-advancedlive-voltage

With machine unplugged, disconnect the motor harness. Test motor winding resistance across its terminals. Then test whether the controller sends drive voltage to the harness connector when a vend is commanded. Drive voltage test requires live measurement.

Qualified technician handoff: stop before live electrical testing, sealed-system refrigeration work, compressor service, or protected-compartment access unless a qualified technician is handling the work.

    Digital Multimeter
    Stop conditions
    • Motor winding shows dead short — do not reconnect, may damage controller

Expected: Motor winding shows expected resistance. Controller sends drive voltage to harness connector when commanded.

    Evidence to note: meter-reading
